VJ Day 75 – Statement from Cllr David Bretherton

VJ Day 75 – Statement from Cllr David Bretherton, our Chair and armed forces and veterans’ champion:

“In May we commemorated the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe of World War 2 and now three months later we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Far East or VJ day.  With the surrender of Japan, the terrible conflict that lasted for six years finally came to an end.

In Clement Atlee’s words ‘The last of our enemies is laid low’.

Today we must remember the sacrifices made by the people of this country and our allies, and the many men and women who suffered and died in order that we can celebrate this occasion today.”
