Smoke Control Areas

In a smoke control area, there’s a limit on how much smoke you can release from a chimney and you can only burn authorised fuel, unless you use an ‘exempt appliance’ (please see the external links to Defra website for further information).

Government regulations (the Clean Air Act 1993/the Environment Act 2021) allow us to declare that a certain area in the South Oxfordshire becomes a smoke control area.

The only smoke control area in South Oxfordshire is at Ladygrove in Didcot.

If you need more information or advice about an air quality issue, please get in touch with our Environmental Protection Team.
