Over £130,000 boost for Didcot Wave gym

The Didcot Wave leisure centre is set for a boost of £133,129 towards new gym equipment.

The centre, located in Newlands Avenue, Didcot, will benefit from new cardio and resistance gym equipment early next year.

The plan is to provide state of the art equipment – with some self-powered items that will reduce the energy consumption of Didcot Wave. The centre is owned by South Oxfordshire District Council and run by its leisure contractor GLL, which manages the district’s Better UK leisure facilities on behalf of the council.

Cllr Maggie Filipova-Rivers, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “This centre is so important to the residents in Didcot and surrounding areas. The new equipment will be a fantastic addition to this facility and enhance the workout for members by providing the latest gym technology.

“This investment shows our commitment to building healthy communities and is part of our wider ongoing investment in leisure facilities across the district. This will this help us encourage active lifestyles in the local community and the introduction of sustainable self-powered equipment is great news for our commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”

Stuart Sutherland, General Manager at Didcot Wave Leisure Pool and Gym said: “The new equipment and refurbishment of the gym at Didcot Wave is great news for our members and for local residents.  We’ll be installing the latest state-of-the-art Technogym kit, spanning everything from bench presses, bikes and rowing machines to free weights and an Olympic Power Rack.

“The gym has also benefitted from new flooring and lighting, all designed to improve the customer experience, while in 2024 we are hoping to introduce a programme of gym-based fitness classes.”

The funding for the improvements was approved by members at South Oxfordshire District Council’s Council meeting on Thursday 12 October. The money will largely come from funds paid by developers which have built homes in the area – known as Section 106 funding, with some capital funding from the council.
