Marking Ukraine Independence Day, councils continue to provide sanctuary to Ukrainians.

Ahead of Ukraine Independence Day on 24 August council leaders share their statements:

Cllr David Rouane Leader at South Oxfordshire District Council, said:

“We continue to provide sanctuary to Ukrainian families and individuals living in South Oxfordshire and our thoughts are with those who have fled conflict and experienced loss.

“Once again I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all who have welcomed and helped families and individuals from Ukraine, providing vital sanctuary and community.

“Since February 2022 we’ve welcomed 803 Ukrainians in South Oxfordshire, and 540 local residents have opened their homes. We’ve also helped 201 Ukrainians make the move from living with host families to private rented accommodation.

“We will continue to do all that we can to make people feel welcome and supported. Through our ongoing work with our partners we help the co-ordinated county-wide response to provide people seeking sanctuary with accommodation and safety.”

Cllr Bethia Thomas, Leader at Vale of White Horse District Council, said:

“Our support for Ukrainians remains steadfast and heartfelt as we continue to provide sanctuary for Ukrainian households living in the Vale. I’m so proud of the huge efforts from residents, businesses and local communities who provide ongoing support.

“Thank you to the many hosts, all 389 of you, who have opened your homes to those fleeing conflict and provided a stable, safe home.

“Alongside our colleagues and communities from across the county we continue to work very hard to support individuals and families. So far, we’ve welcomed 535 people from Ukraine in the Vale. We’ve also supported 140 Ukrainians to move on from the hosting arrangements and into private rented accommodation.

“As we continue this work for as long as it is needed, we do all we can to offer the warmest possible welcome and stability for those seeking safety here.”

Support for Ukrainian guests living in South Oxfordshire and the Vale is co-ordinated by the councils’ Community Hub. People who need help can get in touch with the Community Hub: call 01235 422600 (option 3) or email communitysupport@southandvale.gov.uk

The councils also work with the wider Oxfordshire Migration Partnership to support both Ukrainian guests and their hosts. This includes initial arrival needs, access to funding, health, language and employment support, and working with our housing team for assistance and advice.
